There are many ways you can learn yoga as a beginner at Yoga on High.
Courses for Beginners: We recommend you start with one of our 10 week courses for beginners if at all possible. These courses are especially designed for those who have never practiced yoga, are new to a vigorous practice like Ashtanga or who have stopped practicing for a while and need a refresher. There are new beginner courses of varying levels of difficulty so that everyone can approach yoga in the best way for their own body. In the beginners classes, we keep our student/teacher ratio low so that the teacher can get to know the students, their movement patterns, and their physical gifts and limitations. You will learn the basic principles, techniques, and poses of yoga with plenty of personal attention.
Individual Beginners Classes: If you don’t want to commit to a 10-week session, try one of our beginners’ drop-in classes. You do not need previous experience and can come as often as you like. These classes let you sample either a hatha or Ashtanga class.
All of the following classes are appropriate for beginners depending on what you want and what you need physically. Our front desk staff is very knowledgeable and can help you find the best class for you. Call us if you want some help.
Starting in order from the least vigorous to the most vigorous:
Non-Scary Gentle Yoga: Most of this class is done seated in chairs with simple standing and seated floor exercises for those who are ready. It is specifically designed for people with injuries or health problems who are weak or have limited mobility or pain. If you think you can’t do yoga because you are inflexible or can’t get up and down off the floor easily, this class is for you! It is gentle and led by teachers whose sense of humor and enthusiasm make yoga fun. For new and continuing students.
Basic New Beginners Hatha: This class is appropriate for most people. It includes warm-ups, sun salutations, floor poses and standing poses, all taught with a focus on alignment and relaxation. Also included is training in simple powerful yogic breath practices. For this class you must be able to get up and down off the floor but may have other health considerations such as back or neck discomfort.
Dynamic New Beginners Hatha: This class is appropriate for beginners without health issues like back pain or shoulder injuries, who are looking for a more vigorous yoga experience. All categories of poses are included along with relaxation and breath training. Poses are held longer than in Basic New Beginners and transitions may be faster. While basic sequences are repeated frequently enough to learn them, each class offers new poses and pose sequences.
Ashtanga New Beginners: Ashtanga is the most vigorous practice we offer at Yoga on High. A traditional system, you will learn the same breath-based flow of poses that is practiced world-wide. You’ll work in a room heated to 80 degrees to warm muscles and to encourage deep cleansing through sweating. Ashtanga is physically challenging however your teacher will present the poses first in a modified form so that this practice is accessible to almost anyone willing to work hard.
Course runs for 10 weeks long and total cost is $145.
