Sequencing poses in individual classes and over a series of classes is one of the fine arts of yoga teaching. Great teachers know how to sequence and pace a class so that students’ bodies open willingly and deeply while gaining in strength and stability. As the proliferation of schools of yoga demonstrate, there are many methods of sequencing classes. Some favor a sequence that builds to a climax and subsides to savasana, as the Iyengar school recommends. Others follow a generally stimulating practice like the Ashtanga Primary Series. At Yoga on High, where we practice both of these methods, we are not interested in defining a “right” way to teach, but in knowing the effect of different choices on our bodies and on our students’ bodies. In this workshop, we will look at sequencing from various points of view: anatomic, energetic, and therapeutic. Ashtanga teachers will examine the practical and subtle aspects of the primary series and learn to create sequences for various populations including new beginners, people with physical limitations, and those who require shortened routines. Hatha teachers will learn to create sequences that prepare the body for different poses or balance the body in specific ways. This weekend is eligible for 500-level TT credit, although all teachers and advanced students are welcome.
